Regulator Spotlight - Chris Herrick
Meet John “Chris” Herrick. Chris is the Associate Commissioner of the Customer Operations section which incudes Agent and Adjuster Licensing and Complaints Processing at the Texas Insurance Department. Although relatively new to the Customer Operations (3 months) and leading Agent and Adjuster licensing (8 months), he has 25 years of experience in the Financial Services industry – of which 10 years has been in Regulatory and Compliance. Chris is a Certified Financial PlannerTM and currently holds or has held the following designations: Certified Wealth Strategist, Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI). If those credentials aren’t enough to substantiate knowledge in his profession, Chris previously held a Life/Health license in all 50 states, a Texas Personal Lines license in addition to FINRA Series 6, 63, and 26.
Chris moved around quite a bit coming from a military family but has settled in Texas for the past 35 years. His biggest influencers were his parents and his faith. Being raised in a military family along with his faith in Jesus has helped illustrate the importance of working hard, helping others and walking with integrity. He spent his teen years in San Antonio, Texas and one of his parents worked for USAA. As a major employer in San Antonio, it seemed to be a great place to work and appealed to Chris. He started in the insurance industry with USAA in 1993 and it’s there that he credits his insurance and financial services foundation.
Chris is married and has a modern day ‘Brady Bunch’ family with 6 kids; all grown now. He also has 3 grandchildren. Raising and watching his kids grow into adults and now watching his grandchildren gives him personal pride. Helping others strive and reach for their potential is what motivates him professionally. Chris’ dream job has always been to find a position that allowed him to help others. He finds this same mission within SILA’s programs.
When asked what quote inspires him, he shares a quote that Steve Jobs said to have told John Scully when trying to get him to work for him during the early days of Apple. “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?” This quote resonates with Chris because he can feel Steve Jobs’ passion for what he was doing coming through his words. If we can apply this same level of passion to what we are doing, then we can change the world.
We were fortunate to have met Chris at the 2018 SILA National Education Conference and hope that he’ll again join us at this year’s national conference in San Diego. If you do get to meet Chris, ask him about his ancestors who were part of a significant American Colonial Historical event. Our curiosity is raised, Chris. We want to hear the ‘rest of the story’.
